Department Hosts 17th Annual G. Albert Shoemaker Lecture and EME Awards Banquet

A room of over fifty guests joined J. Brett Harvey, president and chief executive officer of CONSOL Energy Inc., as he presented the 17th Annual G. Albert Shoemaker Lecture on Friday, April 25. Mr. Harvey's lecture, entitled "Reclaiming the High Ground on Safety," focused on mine safety, a topic that has topped the news on several occasions over the past two years.
Following the Shoemaker Lecture, alumni and guests joined EME faculty, staff, and students for the 2008 EME Awards Banquet to commemorate the outstanding achievements of EME students and alumni over the past year.
This year's Robert Stefanko Distinguished Achievement Award in Mineral Engineering was presented to Dr. David R. Maneval, Retired Professor at the University of Alaska, while Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Director of Oil and Gas Ventures of Qatar Petroleum, accepted the C. Drew Stahl Distinguished Achievement Award in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. Other highlights of the evening included:
- Anna Morrison was presented with the 2008 EME Outstanding Staff Award.
- Mohd Nasir Mohd Ismail (M.S. student, PME-IHS) and Jean Denis Pone (Ph.D. candidate, EGEE) were both honored with Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards in General Education.
- Michael Fitzgerald and Joshua Taron, both Ph.D. candidate's in the EGEE graduate program, were named as Graduate Teaching Assistants of the Year.
- Fazil Emre Artun was presented with the Gradaute PNGE Merit Award while Erica Byerly and Benjamin Frederick were given the undergraduate PNGE Merit Awards.
- Vance Rumbaugh received the 2008 Careers in Coal Award.
- Matthew Mowry received the Old Timers Award along with the SME Coal & Energy Division Scholarship.
