Bio Sketch of Mr. J. Brett Harvey

J. Brett Harvey is president and chief executive officer of CONSOL Energy Inc. He is also a member of CONSOL Energy’s Board of Directors and the CNX Gas Corporation Board of Directors.


Prior to joining CONSOL, Harvey was president and chief executive officer of PacifiCorp Energy Inc., a subsidiary of PacifiCorp, one of the country’s largest electric utility companies. In addition, he served as vice president of PacifiCorp Fuels Department and president and chief executive officer of Interwest Mining Company.


Harvey began his business career in 1979 with Kaiser Steel Company as a longwall supervisor at the company’s Sunnyside Mine in Utah. He advanced to mining superintendent in 1980 and became general manager of the mine in 1982. Two years later he was elected vice president and general manager, Kaiser Coal of New Mexico.


In 1986, he joined Utah Power & Light Company as a director of technical sales. He was promoted to general manager-mining division a year later, and to vice president-fuels and mining in 1988.


Harvey was elected vice president – mining of PacifiCorp in 1990. He was named electric operations vice president in 1992, president and chief executive officer of Interwest in 1993, vice president of PacifiCorp Fuels in 1993, and president and chief executive officer of PacifiCorp Energy in 1995. He became president and chief executive officer of CONSOL Inc. January 1, 1998.


Harvey is a member of the coal industry advisory board of the International Energy Agency; is chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bituminous Coal Operators’ Association (BCOA); is chairman of the Executive Committee and member of the Board of the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity and serves as a member of the CEO Group of the Coal Based Generation Stakeholders (CBGS).


In addition, Harvey is a member of the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority; member of the National Coal Council; member of the Waterways Council, Inc.; member of The Conservation Fund; member of the Executive Committee of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development; member of the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America; member of the board of directors and past chairman of the Greater Pittsburgh Council of the Boy Scouts; member of the Board of Directors of the Duquesne Club and a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Chairman’s Council. Harvey has also served as chairman (2002-2004) of the National Mining Association and as vice chairman of the World Coal Institute (2001-2003).


In December 2005, Harvey was elected to the Board of Directors of Barrick Gold Corporation. In December 2007, he was elected to the Board of Directors of Allegheny Technologies Incorporated.


Harvey was presented with The Percy Nicholls Award in 2003. This award is jointly conferred by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, Inc. and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for notable scientific or industrial achievement in the field of solid fuels.


A native of Utah, he holds a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering from the University of Utah. In April 2000, he was the recipient of the John E. Willson Distinguished Alumnus Award.


Harvey and his wife, Carol, are the parents of four children – Sam, Natalie, Trisha, and Jared, deceased.
