Executive Summary

The Department of Energy and Geo-Environmental Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University is looking forward to hosting the first meeting of the Industry Summit on Mining Performance: How to Improve It, How to Sustain It, How to Reduce Costs at the Wyndham Pittsburgh Airport Hotel on August 11-12, 2004. The conference will be a gathering place to discuss performance improvement issues, opportunities, and challenges, and will include presentations from industry leaders in key mining sectors - coal, metals, and non-metallic minerals - as well as from customers, suppliers, and others with a keen interest in mining industry performance.

The conference is scheduled to have a keynote address from Glen Barton, former Chairman and CEO of Caterpillar, and will address a variety of performance improvement topics for the industry. Examples include:

     •  Getting started with performance improvement
     •  High performance teams to improve performance
     •  Strategies to sustain performance levels, and next steps to improve
        performance, after significant performance improvement has been
        achieved
     •  Business communications, information sharing, and connectivity
     •  "Transactional" opportunities to improve performance
     •  Performance measurement and management
     •  Utilizing consultants, academia and institutes

These topics were identified by an industry steering committee, composed of senior managers from eleven organizations, to ensure the timeliness and importance of presentations at the conference:
